Small-holder farmer

We provide the necessary knowledge, training and tools to produce biochar using agricultural waste streams found directly on farms.

BioFlux implements the most up-to-date and stringent biochar carbon removal guidelines to provide training on biomass storage, biochar production and biochar application to agricultural soils. We also provide training and access and use the digital tools used to monitor and quantify our impact. The revenues from carbon financing serve to provide socio-economic benefits to our partnering farming communities, we work to provide transparency tools to monitor the revenue sharing.

How we work:

  • We use accredited methodologies and work with third-party auditors to ensure our projects meet the highest industry standards.
  • We use Open-Source Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) tools to track and monitor the production and application of biochar, our impact is recorded using accurate and transparent digital tools.
  • We verify data supplied by farmers and account for all process emissions before registering our carbon removal (C-sink) impact on public registries.
  • We work with voluntary carbon marketplaces to sell carbon removal credits. We divert the majority of our project revenue to the farmers, increasing their living income and remunerating them for their climate action.

Insetting vs. offsetting

Companies can take two approaches when integrating biochar carbon removal into their net-zero strategy, namely: carbon offsetting or carbon insetting.

Offsetting

Carbon offsetting involves a company, organisation or individual buying carbon offsets generated by a project outside of their own sphere of influence or value chain.

Emissions removed by the external project are then used to compensate for the emissions produced by the company, organisation or individual. Carbon offsetting can be done through voluntary or regulated markets, it can help support environmental and social benefits in developing countries.

For example, if a construction company emits carbon dioxide from its factories, they might buy carbon removal credits from a project that plants trees or produces biochar in another location. This will offset their emissions.

Insetting

Carbon insetting involves a company, organisation or individual investing in a carbon removal project that reduces/removes emissions within their own sphere of influence (value chain or supply chain).

This company-specific carbon project (removal or reduction) will directly impact the company operations, whilst also helping to achieve their climate ambitions. This approach enhances the sustainability and resilience of the company operations.

For example, a chocolate producer can finance a biochar project on the farms they source their cacao from. Here, biochar is  made using agricultural waste, it will be used as a fertilising agent that also stores carbon stably in soils. The producer will be able to certify and claim the carbon storage into their emission reporting.

FAQs

Find answers to your questions.

What is biochar?

Biochar is a carbon-rich, porous material produced through the process of pyrolysis, which involves heating biomass (such as wood, crop residues, or organic waste) in the absence of oxygen. This thermal conversion process transforms the biomass into a stable, carbon-rich substance that can be used to improve soil health, sequester carbon, and enhance agricultural productivity.

What is pyrolysis?

Pyrolysis is a thermochemical process that involves heating organic materials in the absence of oxygen. During pyrolysis, the organic material undergoes chemical changes, breaking down into various products, including biochar, bio-oil, and syngas. Pyrolysis is a key step in the production of biochar and is known for its ability to convert biomass into valuable products while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
