Freya Renewables is a renewable energy asset developer deploying renewable energy projects across the Philippines.
BioFlux is helping Freya Renewables assess different biomass residues sourced within the Philippines to evaluate their suitability for biochar production.
We are also supporting with technology identification and economic assessments regarding different types of biomass residues. The project aims to produce a biochar-based fertiliser that can be commodified and generate durable carbon removal credits that can be traded in the Philippines and internationally.
Another major focus of the project is the production of renewable energy, given the serious energy crisis faced by the Philippines.
Why the Philippines
The Philippines declared a national energy emergency in March 2026, exposing the country's deep dependence on imported fuel. The government has set a target for renewables to account for 35% of power generation by 2030 and 50% by 2040, but major constraints remain around grid infrastructure and energy access. At the same time, the country has abundant biomass resources including rice hulls, coconut waste, cane trash, and forest residues that are largely underutilised. For Freya Renewables, this convergence of energy insecurity, available biomass, and growing policy support for renewables creates a compelling environment for a project that combines renewable energy production with biochar carbon removal.
